Banks Co. Wreck Kills One

An area man is dead after a single-vehicle accident in Banks County over the weekend.

The Georgia State Patrol reported that the accident occurred around 7:24 a.m. on Sunday on Georgia Highway 63 in Banks County.

According to the GSP report, a 2011 Infiniti driven by 41-year-old Mark Joseph Akin of the Red Hill community was traveling southbound on Highway 63 when he failed to maintain his lane.

Troopers reported that Akin then traveled onto the east shoulder of the roadway and struck a guardrail before overcorrecting and traveling onto the west shoulder of the roadway.

The GSP said the vehicle then overturned several times and came to a final uncontrolled rest on its top.

Authorities said Akin was ejected from the vehicle and fatally injured.

The GSP said the final report was not completed as of Monday morning.

According to a report on accessnorthga.com, however, troopers say speed appeared to be a factor.

Funeral services for Akin are set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the B.D. Ginn Memorial Chapel with interment to follow in the Allens United Methodist Church Cemetery.
