Banks Co. School Joins Ag Dept. Program

A Northeast Georgia school system is among those joining the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s “Feed My School for a Week” program.

On Wednesday, Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black announced that the Georgia Grown Feed My School for a Week program is growing to include 27 schools throughout Georgia.

Among the new additions is Banks County Elementary School.

The Agriculture Department said Feed My School for a Week first launched in 2011 to help bridge the gap in nutritional value and quality of food served in Georgia schools, while providing more farm to cafeteria opportunities.

According to the Agriculture Department, it is able to identify local agricultural products available to school systems in diverse areas through the efforts of schools selected for the FMS program.

Ag Commissioner Black said these schools are on the forefront of the farm to school movement in the state and key to the success of the 20/20 Vision for School Nutrition in Georgia, which aims to have at least 20 percent of every meal in every Georgia public school every day to be comprised of Georgia products by the start of the 2020 school year.
