Authorities Investigating Vehicle Break-Ins

Local law enforcement agencies are reporting a series of vehicle break-ins in part of Stephens County.

Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell said that his department has received several calls from one particular area of Toccoa over the last couple of days.

“Over the past few days, the police department has received numerous complaints about vehicles that have been broken into in the Wesley Circle area, Collier Mill Road area, and Fern Valley Drive area,” said Jarrell.

Jarrell said authorities believe the incidents are happening during the late evening and early morning hours.

In addition, Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said his office has received similar reports from communities along Fernside Drive.

According to Jarrell, there is evidence that the individual or individuals responsible have tried, but failed to access locked vehicles.

Jarrell did say, however, that if the person or persons find an unlocked vehicle, they are taking various items that they can get their hands on.

“They are taking change, jewelry, wallets, purses, some electronics,” said Jarrell.

Jarrell said police have walked through the area and actually retrieved some of the stolen items that were apparently left behind by whoever is responsible.

He went on to say that citizens can help protect themselves and their belongings from people who might try to break in.

“All they need to do is lock vehicles and put valuables out of sight,” said Jarrell.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to contact either the Toccoa Police Department or the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office.
