Police have arrested a Lavonia man for the smash and grab burglary of a convenience store.
It happened December 2 at the Royal Food Store at the corner of State Routes 59 and 328.
Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the entire incident was captured on surveillance video.
“The suspect was seen on video actually smashing through the front glass door of the business,” Carlisle said. “He went directly behind the counter where the petty cash was kept. The suspect was seen getting away with a large amount of cash and a large quantity of phone cards.”
Carlisle went on to say that officers with the Lavonia Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office both looked at the video and were able to determine a suspect.
“We were able to develop a suspect early on based on his physical description from video as well as some physical demeanors he was displaying as he was entering the store,” Carlisle said.
According to Carlisle, a break in the case came when the suspect tried to sell some of the phone cards he had allegedly stolen and that transaction was also recorded on surveillance video.
Arrested was Wallace Vaughn of Midway Drive in Lavonia, age unknown. He is charged with felony burglary/smash and grab.
Carlisle said Vaughn is well known to law enforcement in Lavonia.
Vaughn is currently being held in the Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville at last report.
