Area Wendy’s Affected by Cyber Attack Earlier This Year

The Wendy’s fast food corporation says that the Toccoa franchise location was among those nationwide affected by the cyber attack that struck thousands of Wendy’s locations nationwide.

Earlier this year, Wendy’s first reported unusual payment card activity affecting some franchise-owned restaurants and then it determined that malware had been located in the system and disabled.

Wendy’s said that the cyber attack with this malware targeted specific payment card information like cardholder name, credit or debit card number, expiration date, cardholder verification value, and service code.

Officials with the fast food chain said they believe the criminal cyberattacks resulted from service providers’ remote access credentials being compromised, allowing access, and the ability to deploy malware, to some franchisees’ point-of-sale systems.

The company said it worked with investigators to disable the malware involved in the first attack earlier this year and then disabled a variation of it later in the year.

According to Wendy’s website, the Toccoa location was affected by it between December 2, 2015 and June 8, 2016.

Also affected were Wendy’s locations in Clarkesville and Cornelia.

Wendy’s officials said that customers are encouraged to learn more by going to www.wendys.com/notice. A link can also be found by going to the company’s homepage at www.wendys.com.

There, people can find information about restaurant locations that may have been involved in the incidents, as well as information on how customers can protect their credit and details regarding how potentially affected customers can receive one year of complimentary fraud consultation and identity restoration services.

Wendy’s officials said they sincerely apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced as a result of these highly sophisticated, criminal cyberattacks and they are committed to protecting customers and keeping them informed.
