Area Marks Veterans Day Today

Stephens County will mark Veterans Day with an annual event later today.

The annual Veterans Day observance will take place today at 11 a.m. in the new pavilion at Camp Toccoa at Currahee Mountain.

The event is rain or shine.

This year’s guest speaker for the event will be retired United States Marine Corps Major Ed Gerstner.

According to organizers, Gerstner was on the last helicopter out of Saigon just before the Vietnamese captured the city.

Organizers say there will also be plenty of parking and handicapped assistance available.

Meanwhile, Stephens County government offices are closed today.

However, county officials note that the county’s convenience sites are open to the public today.

It should also be noted that Toccoa City Hall is open today as normal.

Finally, Ed Murdock Superstore in Lavonia will be hosting a Veteran’s Benefit Saturday.

All donations at the event will be to raise money for local veterans in need.

At the event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, they will have live music, free BBQ, giveaways, a silent auction, and games and activities for children.
