Apparent Tax Scam Reported in Area

Another tax scam is being reported in the area.

Toccoa City Commissioner and local accountant Jeanette Jamieson said that several elderly people have reported to her that they have received calls from people purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service regarding people’s taxes.

Jamieson said that if someone calls in that manner claiming to be from the IRS, they are not from the IRS.

On its website, the IRS said it will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed a bill.

Also, the IRS said that it will never demand that someone pay taxes without giving someone the opportunity to question or appeal the amount the agency says is owed, require someone to use a specific payment method for their taxes, such as a prepaid debit card, ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone, or threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have someone arrested for not paying.
In addition, the IRS said it does not use email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue involving bills or refunds.
