Animal, Family Reunited By Micro-Chip

A micro-chip results in a happy reunion for a family with its senior dog.

Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter Director Jeff Roberts said that Animal Control responded to a Poplar Street address recently to pick up a dog that had wandered up to a home.

“Some nice people felt sorry for Bailey because he came up to their house shivering,” said Roberts. “Temperatures were in the mid 20s. They took him in and gave us a call. We picked him, brought him back to the shelter, and checked for a micro-chip and were able to find one.”

Roberts said he called the owners and a reunion was able to take place.

The owners informed Roberts that “Bailey” had been missing for three weeks and was 16 years old.

Roberts said it is amazing that the dog survived three weeks in winter conditions outside before being found.

He said without micro-chipping, this reunion may never have taken place.

“That can give us immediate contact with the owner,” said Roberts. “Otherwise, the dog may stay in the shelter.”

Roberts encouraged everyone to have their pets micro-chipped in case of an instance such as this one.
