Accident Leads To Drug Charges

A Toccoa man faces charges after a recent motor vehicle accident in Stephens County.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the accident occurred recently on Brookhaven Circle.

Shirley said a 2001 BMW driven by 40-year-old Michael James McAllister of Holly Springs Road in Toccoa apparently traveled off of the road into a ditch.

The sheriff said that when deputies arrived and approached McAllister to evaluate his injuries, they noticed he was anxious and nervous.

“He was apparently under the influence of drugs after some field sobriety tests were given,” said Shirley.

Shirley said after that, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Drug K-9, “Kilo,” performed a narcotics search of the BMW.

“‘Kilo’ alerted on narcotics inside the vehicle and they were able to recover some methamphetamine and marijuana,” said Shirley.

According to Sheriff Shirley, McAllister is charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Driving While License Suspended, Driving Under the Influenc, and Failure to Maintain Lane.

Shirley said McAllister has been released on bond.

The sheriff added that his office has seized the BMW involved in the accident.
