AAA Offers Road Trip Advice

While summer vacation season may be winding down, some people may still have vacations planned.

For those planning a road trip, AAA is offering some advice.

Georgia AAA Public Affairs Director Garrett Townsend said not having a road-ready vehicle is the fastest way to put brakes on that summer trip.

According to AAA’s American Driving Survey, people drive the most during the summer months from July to September and more than half of calls AAA says it receives from stranded motorists are due to dead batteries, flat tires, low fuel, and being locked out of the vehicle.

Townsend said preventative maintenance on vehicles before trips is very important.

“It is just important to plan ahead,” said Townsend. “Make sure that your vehicle is properly maintained in advance. It is also good to get it checked out.”

He suggested checking tires and coolant and fluid levels.

Other maintenance tips include looking for worn belts or hoses and testing the battery if there is any concern about that.

Townsend said it is also important to plan out the trip in advance to make sure you are road trip ready.

“Take breaks so you are not driving for an extended period of time,” said Townsend. “Make sure that your seat belts are operating correctly. An emergency kit is always advisable. Know your route.”

Other tips include not letting the gas level fall below one-quarter of a tank and locking the vehicle when leaving it while keeping valuables out of sight.
