The Toccoa 11 and 12-year-old softball Little League All-Stars captured the state championship Thursday night with a thrilling, come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Dudley Little League in Columbus.
Toccoa jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Dudley answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.
The game then settled into a pitchers’ duel until Dudley pushed across a run in the bottom of the third inning.
Toccoa would answer right back though and then score the winning run in the top of the sixth inning in Alanna Dunson’s two-out RBI double.
Dunson drove in three runs for Toccoa while going 2 for 2 at the plate.
Natalie Morgan was also 2 for 2 with an RBI.
Mackenzie Rogers came into the game in the third inning and held Dudley to only one run on five hits, striking out three and walking none.
Toccoa now moves onto the Southeast Region tournament starting July 25 in Warner Robins.
Meanwhile, the Toccoa 11 and 12-year-old baseball Little League All-Stars begin play this weekend in state tournament action in Richmond Hill, Georgia, near Savannah.
The tournament starts Saturday. Toccoa’s first game is on Sunday.
